The Competence Centre for Design Management (KCDM) helped Slovenian companies bring design into their business processes. Across two editions of the project between 2012 and 2019, companies of different sizes, industries and levels of experience learned to use design strategically, not just for how a product looks.
For the second edition, KCDM 2.0, we produced video stories in which the companies themselves explain what changed for them, and case studies for the book Utilizing Design for Organizational Success. From scripts and interviews to editing and copy.

The common thread
From followers to leaders: how the strategic use of design moves a company to the front of its market.
Seven video stories
Each story is a portrait of one company. Founders, directors and heads of development explain the challenges they brought into the project, what they learned and how design changed the way they think, innovate and respond to the market. We tied the statements together with animated text that highlights the key milestones, investments and results.

»Design is like medicine: to benefit from it, it has to be prescribed by someone who knows how it works. Either that, or you need to learn how to use it yourself.«
Andraž Mihelin, Founder and Executive Director, Seascape
What we produced
-
Scripts
A structured script for each company, broken down into picture, speaker statements and animated text.
-
Interviews
Questions for the conversations with founders and management, and transcripts of the recorded statements.
-
Editing
We also edited the videos: from selecting the statements to the animated text and the final cuts.
-
Case studies
Each company's key highlights, milestones, investments and successes, which then went into the KCDM book.
The book Utilizing Design for Organizational Success
The book brings together the experience of seven companies that took part in one or both editions of KCDM. It presents them so that readers can see how the companies responded to challenges and made decisions. Alongside a model of four stages of design management maturity, it describes the role of design in a company, and international experts add advice on where to start.
It is written for company owners and directors, students of business and design programmes, and everyone who shapes national development programmes. Its publication was co-financed by the Center for Creativity at the Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Regional Development Fund.
The result
The companies that went through KCDM now tell their own story: in the video stories collected at kcdm-case-studies.com and in the book, published in Slovenian and English. Other companies find comparable cases in them, showing that with design the path from follower to market leader is possible.
